含羞草研究所 Orchestra

The 含羞草研究所 Orchestra is an ensemble of skilled musicians that includes current college faculty, staff, and students. We encourage all levels of musicians to join. Most student members are non-music majors and no special priority is given to music majors. The Orchestra is open to strings, brass, woodwinds, and percussion musicians. Rehearsal is once weekly and the orchestra performs a concert at the end of each semester. This is a fun group and a great way to meet new friends!

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, non-music majors are eligible to receive orchestra scholarships.

We play all kinds of musical genres from Christmas music, pop, and everything in between.

Yes鈥� most of the time. There are some sports that practice at the same time as orchestra rehearsals. In that case, it may not be possible to be involved in both activities. However, when possible, the orchestra director is willing to work with athletic coaches to make both activities work for the student. Please contact the Director of Instrumental Ensembles, Paul Babelay, at聽paul.babelay@montreat.edu聽with your specific athletic team information if this is something you would like to pursue.

In most cases, you cannot stack an athletic and orchestra scholarship. However, the music department is willing to look into this possibility on an individual case-by-case basis.

We meet once a week for two hours for rehearsal.

Yes, orchestra scholarships are stackable with honors scholarships not to exceed the price of full tuition.

Members will be expected to attend all concerts that they are playing in. Members under scholarship will be required to take applied lessons as well. Applied lessons and ensembles can be used towards humanities credits.

Annual performance opportunities include:

  • Christmas and Spring Pops Concerts.
